Deck Material Options & Cost

If you’re planning to upgrade your old deck or build a new deck, choosing the right type of deck material is the most important decision. There are a variety of deck materials to choose from that range greatly in pricing and functionality. Here is a quick guide to help plan your backyard getaway.

1) Pressure-Treated Wood

Pressure-treated wood is made from fir and coated in anti-rot and insecticide agents that are safe for your family. This is one of the most popular decking options due to its low cost and aesthetic. The basic brown color of this option can be enhanced with a coat of stain or paint and is easy to change. Pressure-treated lumber can last for decades with the correct care and maintenance.

Average cost of pressure-treated decking: About $2.35 per sq. ft.

2) Cedar Decking

The natural feel and look of real wood are unrivaled. This decking favorite is inexpensive and easy to customize to your decking need. The expected life of this material is anywhere from 15 to 20 years with annual refinishing of the wood.

Average cost of cedar decking: About $3.75 per sq. ft.

3) Vinyl Decking

Vinyl, also known as polyvinyl chloride (PVC), has been the fastest-growing decking material over the past decade. This style of decking material is nearly maintenance-free and highly customizable. Vinyl has no wood to its composition, so there is no worry about it rotting or having termites. Color options are endless and most brands come with a decade-plus warranty.

Cost of vinyl decking: About $7.50 per sq. ft. for hollow core; $9.50 for solid core

4) Composite Decking

Composite decking is made from wood fiber combined with recycled polyethylene. This style of decking is similar to vinyl in that it is aesthetically pleasing and low-maintenance. This style of decking comes in a wide range of colors and textures that can closely resemble real wood.

Cost of composite decking: About $7.80 per sq. ft.
